Can Frequent Enema Use Lead To Getting Hooked On Enemas?

A myIBSteam Member asked a question 💭
Anaheim, CA

I've had chronic constipation since age 14,doctors back then told my mom to give me Fleet enema if I didn't have a BM by day 3 ,well I wound up having to get enemas from my mom (an exn LVN),almost every week till now(I'm in 50s)..
I just read that too frequent of enemas can cause dependence on enemas anyone else know?

I have worked in the hospitals over 30 years myself. Getting hooked on anything depends on you and your system. I've seen people that most generally can take them or leave them. Your doctor should have adviced the use of other things as well. What matters is: Do you think you are hooked on enemas? Have you tried anything else? Such as a laxative that draws moisture to your intestinal track so you can go on your own? Miralax is good for that. I'm sure there are others that do the same thing just in case you can't take Marilax. Over 30 years is a long time to be using anything. And, yes, laxatives are addictive.

I've heard that before that too many enemas can make you dependent on them.
